Carla Ward concerned as FA investigates Villa’s ‘horrible mistake’ in League Cup

Aston Villa boss Carla Ward admitted a “horrible mistake” to field ineligible player Noelle Maritz which could knock them out of the League Cup.

Defender Maritz was brought off the bench at half-time in Villa’s 7-0 rout over Sunderland on Wednesday with the score at 3-0 when she stepped onto the pitch.

Maritz joined Villa from Arsenal in January but had previously made three appearances for the Gunners earlier in the competition.

The Football Association has referred the matter to an independent tribunal for “an alleged breach of Cup Rule 8.19”.

Eddie Howe hails Newcastle’s resilience after victory at Fulham

Eddie Howe praised the resilience of his Newcastle side after their 2-0 win against Fulham at Craven Cottage saw them progress to the FA Cup fifth round for just the second time in 18 years.

Only once since 2006 have the Magpies reached the competition’s last-16, when the side managed by Steve Bruce fell at the quarter-final stage against Manchester City.

Howe emphasised the importance of the club’s last shot at winning a trophy this campaign after they despatched Marco Silva’s team in west London.

Love it, Tripps!

Aston Villa 1 Stoke City 2: Moses spoils Sherwood´s Villa bow

Stoke City came from behind to earn a 2-1 Premier League win and spoil Tim Sherwood s first match in charge of Aston Villa.

A stoppage-time penalty from Victor Moses spoiled Tim Sherwood s first match in charge of Aston Villa as Stoke City earned a 2-1 victory in Saturday s Premier League match.

Sherwood saw his side remain in the bottom three after Ron Vlaar hauled down Moses, with the forward coolly converting from 12 yards after the defender had seen red.

Scott Sinclair was able to take one of the few chances the home side created as he headed in his first top-flight goal since August 2012 after 20 minutes, but Stoke restored parity before the break.

Bournemouth 0 Tottenham 0: Cherries hold toothless Spurs

Tottenham missed the chance to establish a two-point advantage at the top of the Premier League for three hours at least after a feisty 0-0 draw at Bournemouth.

Mauricio Pochettino s men won the corresponding fixture 5-1 last season but there was never any prospect of a repeat and the visitors were hanging on for a point at the end.

Spurs can also count themselves extremely fortunate to finish with 11 men on the field with both Erik Lamela and, in particular, substitute Moussa Sissoko lucky to escape red cards.

Lamela was given the benefit of the doubt in the first half when, having already been booked, he slid carelessly into Dan Gosling, while Sissoko could face further action from the Football Association for an inexplicable elbow into the face of Harry Art…

Prediction: Crystal Palace vs Manchester United

Best Odds: 11/10

Bookmaker:

Looking to make a return to winning ways in midweek, Manchester United will make the trip to an empty Selhurst Park on Wednesday night.

Crystal Palace

Starting with the hosts, putting in another sluggish display against relegation scrappers Fulham last weekend, Roy Hodgson has seen his position at Selhurst Park come under real scrutiny. While Crystal Palace might have managed to pick up that incredibly flattering 2-1 victory away at rivals Brighton a fortnight ago, the one-time England boss has seen his side gain a real reputation for their inconsistencies. Lucky to have left with a point to show for their troubles against the Cottagers on Sunday lunchtime, Palace have really struggled to fill the void left by a missing Wilfried Zaha…

Barrada leaves Getafe

Getafe have announced that midfielder Abdelaziz Barrada has left in order to join UAE Pro-League side Al Jazira Club.

The Morocco international joined the Madrid club s B team from Paris Saint-Germain in 2010, and has played a prominent role since breaking in to the first team at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez 12 months later.

But he has now elected to move on from La Liga, despite having made 30 starts as Getafe finished 10th in the Spanish top-flight last term.

Al Jazira finished third in the 2012-13 UAE Pro League, securing qualification for next season s AFC Champions League as a result.

Barrada was born in France but elected to represent Morocco at international level, and has scored two goals in 15 appearances for the north African country.

Fabio Coentrao still hoping for January exit

Real Madrid full-back Fabio Coentrao has set his sights on leaving Santiago Bernabeu, .

The Portuguese defender missed out on a deadline day move to Manchester United, but has since signed a new deal at Santiago Bernabeu until June 2018.

However, AS understands that los Blancos only offered the player a new contract so as to earn more from his sale, seeing as how Coentrao remains keen on January exit.

The 25-year-old never quite managed to justify the €30 million transfer fee and went on to suggest that he was unhappy by the treatment at Santiago Bernabeu.

The latest report suggest that January exit on the cards, with clubs from England and Portugal showing interest in his services.

Fabio Coentrao has featured in mere 40 La Liga matches since a…

Pickford wants Europe in Silva´s first Everton season

Jordan Pickford has challenged Everton to seal a European spot in Marco Silva s first season in charge.

The Toffees appointed former Watford boss Silva on May 31 after a turbulent 2017-18 campaign in which they finished eighth, after Ronald Koeman, David Unsworth and Sam Allardyce all had spells in charge of the first team.

Silva has been backed in the transfer window, with close to £60million being spent on Richarlison and Lucas Digne, as Everton target a return to continental football.

And Pickford believes a top-six finish should certainly be the goal for the coming campaign.

Council open to selling San Siro to Inter & AC Milan amid new stadium proposal

Mayor Giuseppe Sala has revealed Milan council is open to the possibility of selling San Siro to Inter and AC Milan.

The Italian giants announced in July they had taken the first steps to replacing their iconic home with a new 60,000-seater stadium after filing a proposal with local authorities.

Inter and bitter rivals Milan have a long-running lease on San Siro, though it is in need of significant regeneration.

However, Sala said he wants to see the two teams remain at their current ground – which is owned by the city of Milan and has offered them an alternative option.
