Ferguson sheds light on Beckham, Keane, Benitez

Alex Ferguson has used his new autobiography to shed light on many incidents during his 26-year spell at Manchester United.

The former United manager used his new book, Alex Ferguson: My Autobiography, to talk in detail about his relationships with players, opponents and transfer dealings during his tenure at Old Trafford.

Here we take a look at some of the highlights from the book

Ferguson brought David Beckham through the youth academy at Old Trafford and gave him his Premier League debut in 1995, however he admitted he had to go in 2003:

David was the only player I managed who chose to be famous.

David thought he was bigger than Alex Ferguson. You cannot have a player taking over the dressing room. Many tried. David was looking for the sympathy vote fro…

Klopp: Flanagan still faces fitness battle

Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan must work on his physical resistance if he is to play regular first-team football, according to manager Jurgen Klopp.

Prior to his January comeback, Flanagan had spent 19 months on the sidelines due to a knee injury.

The 23-year-old, who has one England cap, last played for the Anfield club when he skippered his side at Southampton in March.

After featuring in the under-21 side s 2-1 victory against Norwich City on Monday, Klopp provided an update on the right-back s fitness,

Flanno is in a situation that [means] he cannot train all the time, he told a news conference.  When you re out for this long period, you can t train all the time and you can t build a base, that s all.

It s a little bit similar, d…

Premier League Preview: Chelsea v Hull City

Jose Mourinho makes his eagerly awaited return to the Premier League when his Chelsea side host Hull City on Sunday.

The Portuguese enjoyed a highly successful first stint at the club, with his three-year stay yielding two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and two League Cup triumphs.

He is the man charged with bringing the Premier League crown back to Stamford Bridge for the first time since Carlo Ancelotti achieved the feat in 2009-10.

The club have made several additions during the close-season, including forward Andre Schuerrle from Bayer Leverkusen, goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer from Fulham and midfielder Marco van Ginkel from Vitesse.

And Dutchman Van Ginkel is itching to be involved against Hull.

I m looking forward to the first game, the 20-year-old tol…

Heynckes preaches value of upbeat Bayern dressing room

Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes stressed the importance of player-coach relations after starting his fourth stint in charge with a 5-0 rout of Freiburg.

The two-time Champions League winner picked up from where he left off in 2013 as the Bundesliga giants cruised to their first win in four competitive fixtures.

An own goal from Freiburg captain Julian Schuster and Kingsley Coman s first of the season set the hosts on their way, before Thiago Alcantara, Robert Lewandowski and Joshua Kimmich made it a thrashing after half-time.

And, having been warmly welcomed back to the Allianz Arena, Heynckes acknowledged the need to avoid the kind of dressing-room fractions which reportedly contributed to Carlo Ancelotti s downfall.

A coach must be at one with his…

Colombia v Paraguay: Moreno and Cardona vie to replace James

Dayro Moreno and Edwin Cardona are vying to replace injured captain James Rodriguez in Colombia s match against Paraguay at the Copa America Centenario.

James scored his country s second goal before he was forced off by a dislocated shoulder in Colombia s opening game of the tournament, a 2-0 win over hosts United States in Santa Clara.

The Real Madrid playmaker is expected to miss the Group A game against Paraguay at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Tuesday, before returning for the clash with Costa Rica four days later.

In his absence, head coach Jose Pekerman could opt to move Monterrey s Cardona, who set up Cristian Zapata s opener against the US, into a central role.

The responsibility to replace James is for everyone, said attacking midfielder Cardona.…

Was Sunderland a blip? – The stats behind David Moyes´ managerial career

David Moyes is back in a Premier League job after being appointed as Slaven Bilic s successor at West Ham, and he might feel as though he has a point to prove.

The Scot earned himself a fine reputation for his work at Everton, guiding them to seven successive top-10 finishes in the Premier League before replacing Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in 2013, but that is where everything started to go wrong.

Little went to plan for him at Old Trafford, with Moyes lasting less than a season and his subsequent job at Real Sociedad was no better.

After a bit of a break, Moyes took over at Sunderland in July 2016 and ultimately led them to relegation last season, though the fact the Black Cats are bottom of the Championship after 16 matches this season suggests their is…

Hull confirm Bruce talks over England job

Hull City have confirmed boss Steve Bruce has held informal talks with the Football Association over the England manager s job.

The position has now been vacant for three weeks after Roy Hodgson resigned in the immediate aftermath of England s defeat to Iceland at the last-16 stage of Euro 2016.

Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce was pictured emerging from the house of FA vice-chairman David Gill last week while Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe and United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann have also been mentioned as candidates.

Sunderland s response was to urge the FA to do their business quickly so as to avoid disrupting their preparations for the new season, and Hull have done likewise.

Their statement read: The club can confirm that manager Steve Bruce has held i…

Christensen proves merit of Chelsea loan system, says Emenalo

Former Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo said defender Andreas Christensen is a prime example that the club s loan system works.

Danish centre-back Christensen is back at Chelsea and in the first team after spending two years on loan with Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach.

The 21-year-old, who moved to Stamford Bridge in 2012, started instead of star David Luiz in Chelsea s 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.

Asked about the club s loan programme and whether Christensen is a good example of the working being done, Emenalo – who stepped down from his position on Monday – told Chelsea TV: Absolutely.

Andreas, unbeknown to him, gave me a wonderful parting gift yesterday because his performance is indicative …

Alonso pens new Real deal

that Xabi Alonso has signed a two-year contract extension with Real Madrid, ending speculation that he could be about to return to the Premier League.

The midfielder had been linked with both Chelsea and a return to Liverpool – the club he was at for five years previous to his move to the Bernabeu, but will now remain with the La Liga giants until 2016.

The 32 year old revealed the news on Twitter on Wednesday, posting a picture of himself and Real chief Florentino Perez holding the famous white shirt with ‘Alonso 2016’ on the back along with the caption, ‘This will continue to be my home for another two years. Mancini still wants more from Italy despite continuing unbeaten run

Roberto Mancini does not think his Italy team are the finished article just yet, despite a 4-0 thrashing of the Czech Republic extending their unbeaten run ahead of Euro 2020.

Italy have not lost an international fixture since a 1-0 Nations League reverse against Portugal back in September 2018, with Friday s emphatic friendly triumph making it 27 consecutive matches without defeat.

Ciro Immobile and Nicolo Barella both benefited from deflections to score in the first half, while birthday boy Lorenzo Insigne celebrated with the third goal before setting up Domenico Berardi soon after.

Mancini was pleased with the performance against excellent opponents, though made clear there are areas Italy can improve as they now focus on their tournament opener against Tur…
